About Book

Dental public health is essential to the practice of dentistry as it puts dentistry in context within society and seeks to answer questions at a population level. This introductory book aims to stimulate the reader's interest and encourage a questionning approach to dental public health issues and their relationship to clinical practice. Divided into four sections, the book covers the philosophy and basis of the subject, the epidemiology of oral diseases, oral health promotion and oral health services. 'Essential Dental Public Health' serves as a practical and relevant overview of the subject. It includes summaries of the points made with 'take home' messages to apply to practice. Where appropriate, problems are included so that the student may learn by problem solving. Further reading lists are provided allowing information in related subjects that are beyond the scope of this book. The reader will gain an understanding of the principles of dental public health sufficient for an undergraduate dental student. The book provides material to fulfill their requirements but also provides an excellent introduction for anyone looking for more detailed knowledge.
Reviews

Reviewer: Rodrigue G. Barakat, DMD(Loyola University Medical Center)
Description: This is a book for dental students dedicated to the topic of dental public health.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to provide an overview and introduction to the core elements of dental public health to undergraduate dental students.
Audience: The book is directed towards dental students.
Features: This isoft cover book contains black-and-white tables and diagrams covering multiple topics related to dental public health. It is written by authors from the U.K. and is principally based on the practice of dentistry in that country. It contains interesting chapters such as evidence-based dentistry and it provides readers with basic tools for evaluating the literature. There is, of course, a large section of the book covering prevention and oral health promotion, mainly based on the U.K. experience.
Assessment: This constitutes an excellent resource on dental public health. It is written in a very comprehensive manner and helps dental students to understand their role in society. I appreciated how the authors were able to include references to the experience in different countries, but the main emphasis is on the U.K. experience. This makes it less interesting for the reader outside of the UK.
