Reviews

Reviewer: Gordon J. Baker, BVSc, PhD, MRCVS,Dip ACVS(University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)
Description: This guide for equine dentistry is composed of 12 chapters illustrated by black-and-white and some color figures. There are two appendixes on dental instruments, a glossary, and an index.
Purpose: The author has produced a practical guide for the field of equine dentistry. This is a worthy objective and, for the most part, the author has met this aim.
Audience: "The book is written with the student and equine practitioner in mind. In my opinion, this book meets the aims and fills a niche in the area of equine dentistry. Although not an authority on dentistry herself, the author has reviewed and presented a useful practical guide. "
Features: The book presents opening chapters on dental anatomy and dental equipment and then covers basic dental techniques. There are useful chapters on the idiosyncrasies of horses from newborn and weanling through maturity to the dental conditions of the geriatric horse. The book concludes with a useful practitioners' guide to the marketing of the equine dental practice. The glossary is a useful list of definitions of dental terms.
Assessment: This book, dedicated to the practical aspects of equine dentistry, gives a step-by-step illustrated account of various dental procedures and techniques. Case reports are used in the text and in the illustrations. The section on dental examination might have benefited from the inclusion of some material on basic equine dental radiology and some guidance on the radiographic signs of dental disease. This is a useful, practical, and quick reference to the management of the commoner problems encountered with equine dental disease in practice.
