Kicking off with "1 tiny baby starts to run" and ending with 10 sleeping babies tucked into their cribs, Katz (Princess Baby) once again puts her kewpie doll crew through their paces, this time enumerating all the fun things that babies do, from toe wriggling and noisemaking to eating with abandon. Giggles, smiles (both angelic and ever-so-slightly mischievous) and wide-eyed wonder abound as the babies frolic and accumulate additional compadres in nursery-hued settings. "4 noisy babies bang and shout!/ Along comes another... to sing right out!" The second half of every couplet is split by a page turn, providing a gentle tease that encourages readers to flip the page and complete the rhyme. Ideally suited for read-aloud in both cadence and content, the book is a solid addition to Katz's extensive oeuvre of adorableness. Ages 1-5. (Sept.)

Children's Literature - Beverley Fahey

It is never too early to read to your baby and this little counting book is just right. The gouache, colored pencil, and collage illustrations feature cherubic, multi-ethnic babies engaged in typical behavior. Babies spin and bounce, bang and shout, wiggle their toes, take a bath, put on their pj's and snuggle in for the night. The rhyming verse has a satisfying lilt, and the count from one to ten is just long enough for a squirmy baby to sit through. The hardcover format is perfect for caregivers to hold and share but it would have been perfect to have this published in board book format similar to Katz's Where is Baby's Belly Button? so little ones could handle and "read" it on their own. Playful babies "spin," "bounce," and "hop" across the pages of this winsome counting book. The jaunty rhyme adds to the fun and anticipation: "5 jiggly babies wriggle their toes. Along comes another...." On the following page a sidebar reveals that the new friend "...wiggles her nose!" This youngster then joins in as "6 hungry babies sip and chew." Katz's gouache, colored-pencil, and collage illustrations feature her signature roundheaded characters. The backgrounds artfully combine complementary colors and patterns. After the multicultural chums splash in the tub and put on their pj's, they fall asleep in 10 cozy beds. A good choice for storytimes.-Linda Ludke, London Public Library, Ontario, Canada
