Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs

Where to begin? I am such a fan of graphic novels because they make it perfect for reluctant readers who never finish a book because reading is difficult for them. They are also a perfect way for a nonreader to read classics they may never read. A good graphic novel allows even the poorest reader to complete a book, take part in classroom discussions, and write a book report. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed in this particular book. There is a synopsis on the title page that gives the reader information about what has happened so far in the series. It begins with, "Teenager Alex Wilder and five other only children are shocked to learn that their parents, a collection of happily married Los Angeles socialites, are actually part of something called ‘the Pride.' Alex suspects these strangely dressed men and women might be superheroes, until the kids secretly witness the adults murder a young girl in some kind of dark sacrificial ritual." The very first words in this book are "What the %*#*?" I just have a hard time reviewing books for young people where parents will kill their own children in order to keep a secret. As a reviewer, I have to say it is well written, the illustrations are good, and the ending leaves the reader wanting to find out what will happen next. As a person, teacher, and mother, I cannot find anything good about the book's message for children of any age. I do not recommend this book. Reviewer: Kathie M. Josephs
