California, the Golden State, conjures up a multitude of images: rolling oak-dotted hills, vast desert landscapes, rugges coastal strands, towering Sierra peaks, fertile valleys, glacial lakes, redwood forest, and more. In UNFOLDING BEAUTY, the astounding variety and beauty of Californai are reflected not only in the works of authors like John Muir, John Steinbeck, Wallace Stegner, and Robinson Jeffers, but also in surprising and provocative selections from writers such as Jack Karouac, Norman Mailer, Joan Didion, Aldous Huxley, and Charled Bukowski. Reading UNFOLDING BEAUTY is like attending an idyllic banquet, where one after another the eloquent guests — from Mary Austin to Gary Soto — toast Califronia's varied landscapes with descriptions that are themselves the feast — Rebecca Solnit.

Reviews

Library Journal

Unfolding Beauty focuses on the state's natural world. Editor Beers (English, Santa Clara Univ.) selects writings that take California as its subject and setting. The book is divided into seven parts, each targeting a particular region of California. The scope includes the traditional authors mentioned in the previous title as well as many 20th-century authors, such as Wallace Stegner, William Saroyan, Gretel Ehrlich, and Charles Bukowski. Essays, poetry, and excerpts round out a collection featuring the natural paradise of the land. Sentiments differ throughout the collection, setting up contrasts between descriptions of untouched beauty and environmental degradation. Both books are necessary purchases for regional libraries. Elsewhere, libraries interested in an historical appreciation of the literature (The Literature of California) or multiple view of the environment (Unfolding Beauty) should purchase accordingly.--Joyce Sparrow, Juvenile Welfare Board of Pinellasa Cty., FL Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
